Nine years ago, poet and memoirist Philip Robinson interviewed Karen E. Osborne about her debut novel, Getting It Right. Now, on publication day, the two reunite to discuss its reimagining as Getting It Right: A Psychological Thriller.

Why return to a novel nine years after its original publication?

Karen explains that she had written five novels when two familiar characters, Kara and Alex, began speaking to her again. Their unfinished business inspired her to begin writing a sequel. But returning to their world also prompted her to revisit—and reimagine—the original novel.

In this special episode of What Are You Reading? What Are You Writing?, Philip explores the women at the heart of the story.

Kara has survived childhood abuse and built a life for herself, but healing remains unfinished. Alex grew up surrounded by privilege, yet her childhood left emotional wounds of its own. When a dying father's request brings these two very different women together, both must confront family secrets, difficult choices, and unexpected dangers.

Their conversation explores the meaning of family, the racial and economic differences that shape the sisters' experiences, and the common humanity Karen hopes readers will recognize.

Karen also shares how her personal experience adopting her daughter informs her understanding of family and why she hopes the novel inspires readers to consider ways they might support children in foster care.

And there's good news for readers who become attached to Alex and Kara: their story continues in an upcoming sequel.

Meet Alex and Kara. Discover their secrets. Decide for yourself what it really means to get things right.

Watch or listen to this special publication-day interview, then discover Getting It Right: A Psychological Thriller.
